The male Himalayan Monal is known for its dazzling colours. It has a metallic green head, bright blue back, fiery copper feathers, and a long, golden-orange tail. The bird's neck gleams with shades of green, blue, and purple, creating a rainbow-like effect. The female, in contrast, has a more subdued brown and white appearance, which helps in camouflaging while nesting.

This bird thrives in the high-altitude forests and meadows of the Himalayas, ranging between 2,100 and 4,500 meters in elevation. Its preferred habitat includes dense oak and conifer forests in summer and shrublands during winter. It is commonly found in Uttarakhand, as well as neighbouring regions like Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and Bhutan.

Himalayan Monals are ground-dwelling birds and are often seen foraging for food in the morning and evening. Their diet includes a variety of insects, seeds, berries, and tubers. They are known for their powerful beaks, which they use to dig into the ground to find food.

As the state bird of Uttarakhand, the Himalayan Monal holds cultural and ecological significance. Its vibrant beauty symbolizes the rich biodiversity of the region. Conservation efforts are in place to protect this bird, as its habitat is sometimes threatened by human activities and deforestation.

The Himalayan Monal is the jewel bird of Uttarakhand and a symbol of the region’s commitment to preserving its unique wildlife and environment.
