Ingredients to look for in your moisturizer

Updated: Mar 5, 2023

Moisturization is ESSENTIAL to every skincare routine. Without moisturization, your skin can be vulnerable to inflammation and wrinkles.

Moisturizers help the stratum corneum or the surface of the skin perform one of its many functions- prevent water loss.

An effective moisturizer must contain these ingredients to hydrate and moisturize the skin effectively.

#1 -Humectants

Humectants draw moisture into the skin and help prevent TEWL (trans-epidermal water loss). Look out for humectants like glycerin, lactic acid, hyaluronic acid, or propanediol in your moisturizer. Avoid propylene glycol if you have sensitive skin.

#2 - Emollients or oils

Emollients or oils soften the skin and some also prevent TEWL. Choose an emollient according to your skin type.

#3 - Occlusives

Look out for occlusives like butter and waxes like shea butter. Waxes can be found in emulsions and balms. Petroleum Jelly is also very effective in locking moisture in and is helpful with dry skin.
